Essay #5

During the middle of the nineteenth century, in the Deep South society were dominated by the white race and the old confederate ways of slavery and cruelty towards African Americans. When Mark Twain first published the book called “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" of the year 1885 there was a lot of controversy towards the book. When the book was published it made a lot of controversy against the believes of African Americans. Many people may still disagree that blacks were called with the N-word to maintain a historical realism and others may agree. During that period of time Mark Twain described how African Americans were treated and how they were uneducated. Africans were treated very disrespectfully because Americans had the control of blacks, especially slaves. Most of the slaves were blacks and had no respect from their owner’s because they were always told to do whatever the owner said. Also during that period of time Africans were recognized to be lower class Africans because of their low income. However, I do agree that African American were recognized by the use of the N-word to maintain historical realism during that period of time, but I also disagree because the N-word is a powerful word that can only be used by the black race.

The book of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn did made a lot of controversy during the 1880’s because it was the time when people were not treated with the same respect. If I were to be alive during that period of time, I would have bent offended or shy to say the N-word because I think is it a word that should only be used by African Americans. I would rather call African Americans by their names or nicknames but I would never call them by the N-word. I would not called the by the N-word because I am not an African American. Even though I am not an African I would still feel unrespectful to the black race because not everyone can use the N- word. Maybe for other races the N-word may not mean anything to them but for Africans it might mean a lot. Everybody has different believes and point of views about others. For example, when I see a Mexican trying to talk like an African American by using the N-word I get really frustrated because for me it is like making fun of a race. It was probably very frustrated and inadequate to African slaves when Mark Twain published “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” because the book made a lot of controversy amongst the believes of people.

For this essay i am also going to compare Mark Twain and peaches henry to see their points of views against the N-word and why its very controversial..

Summary from Henry peaches: She agrees that Mark Twain did wrote the N-word many times throughout the book to represent some type of realism, Henry even said: i can still recall the anger i felt as my classmates read aloud the word "nigger" because some white students snickered and some giggled. I also believe that Mark Twain did mark a great point by using the book but i somehow think that he was still being racist by the use of the N-word throughout the novel. For some people the N-word could symbolized a lot of things while others dont care ,plus some passages from Mark Twain were being very racist.

I think that my quote would be : "One has to be deliverately dense to miss the point Mark Twain is making here and to construe such pasages as evidence of his "Racism"(390).

I believe that the quote means that Twain was making a point across by the use of the N-word throughout the book. But it also makes me think that he maybe stated the N-word many times in the book as evidence of his racism. Maybe the quote is just saying that she believes that mark Twain is making the book to be more realistic with use of the N-word. I also think that the N-word should be edited, even Henry talks about how the book was removed from public schools because blacks complained about the racially offeninse tone in the novel.

the first two paragraphs are from my essay 4...but i am going to add henry's point of view and some quotes to my essay 5..

  1. thesis I also disagree because the N-word is a powerful word that can only be used by the black race.

good use of summary by peaches henry. about hearing a mexican use the n-word you feel they are making fun of african americans. elaborate a little more maybe write about a specific time that might of happened.

go deeper in your critical thinking, not just a couple of sentences.

use at least one more claim about how you feel the author is maintaining historical realism.

good start so far keep up the good work and go more in depth with your personal thoughts.
    good luck!

  2. your thesis is; You think that the n word is was used to maintain historical, but you disagree with the over use of the n-word because

you presented good examples, and you might want to add some quotes from peaches henry. And talk about those quotes. You are paragraphs are very clear.

I am doing my essay about Kaplan and I have read it like three times because it is kind of difficult to get the right quotes.

    good luck with the rest!
