The video about Elijah smith is really contriversial because i cant believe that in a elementary school children cant wear an Obama shirt because teachers and stuff think is offensive to other children but how is it offensive?. I totally disagree with the school principal on not letting Elijah wear the obama shirt because there are many Elementary students that wear other types of shirts that demonstrates and looks agressive and violent and the principal does not tell them or their parents anything about it. I dont think is fair what the school is doing to Elijah Smith. Plus he is just a little fifth grader that is just proud of having the first African American president of the united states of America. If there was a Mexican American president i would be so proud and happy just like Elijah. people have their own rights to make thier own desicions on what they want to wear because they are the ones paying for their own clothes not other people. I know there is dress codes for schools but in the dress codes it does not tells a student to not wear a Presidents shirt.So i just dont agree with the thought of not wearing an Obama Shirt because i dont see any agressiveness or violence.

where is the freedom of expression went to right. yeah, he is only 5th grader and proud to have African American president of USA. I agree with you on the shirt I don't see any agressiveness or violence on the shirt.
ReplyDeleteI get what you are saying but we don't live in the south where people express there racism as much. We don't really know how the other kids were reacting to the shirt.

ReplyDeleteso heres the deal with the essays. post up your draft on Tuesday (2-10-09), doesnt matter what time. And then wednesday you need to post two peer reviews. youll be doing Juans jssay and Carolines.

-we are supposed to meet with the teacher at somepoint for a writing conference. dont worry about missing this one. you have all semester to meet with her 3 times.

seems to me like they didnt want him to wear the obama shirt for his own protection. its a diffeent world in the south, he would most likely have been at risk wearing that shirt, if nothing else it would have caused a lot of drama.
ReplyDeletethey didnt ban the shirt either, they said he could wear it after the inauguration. meaning that they figured that even if someone was against obama, they would be out of luck, and have to deal with the fact that he is president. attacking someone for wearing a shirt of their president would not be very patriotic. prior to the inaguration some people saw obama as just a black man. now he i seen as the president. big difference.

ReplyDeletesorry forgot to tell you that. we dont actually have class until the 19th. tomorrow the 10th is writing conferences, as is the 17th, so if your not signed up for one, (which you dont need to, i didnt). then you dont have to come on either date. And then the 12th is a holiday so no class then either.
you just have to have your essay posted by tomorow on here, and then do some peer reviews on wednesday. i think that covers everything. have a nice break.
